Classroom Management
My classroom is a safe, nurturing and positive environment that fosters students’ love for learning. I create an environment where each student matters and students strengths and weaknesses are supported. Students will be individually motivated with positive reinforcement, rewards and consequences.
In my classroom I implement social thinking as a necessary tool to build self-awareness. I use "Whole Body Listening" as a tool for students to show behavior on the rug. This tool helps students to be aware of their own behavior and others. Students help each other to demonstrate appropriate behavior, and specific areas that students much change to show appropriate behavior. I believe Whole Body helps students to become active listeners and become motivated throughout an instructed lesson.
I also incorporate behavioral charts as a guide to help monitor individual behaviors in the classroom. My behavioral chart is color chart that uses the color; green, yellow, orange and red. Each student begins with the color green, and students remain in the color green when they follow the rules and expectations in the classroom. If a student is showing inappropriate behavior in the classroom he/she color will change. The benefits of the color chart are that it allows students to self-monitor their own behavior and motivate peers to practice positive behavior. Students have the ability to change their color card by showing appropriate behavior in the classroom; i.e. listening, following directions and being kind to others.
Part of creating a positive learning environment is providing positive reinforcement and rewards for students’ behaviors. I acknowledge student's strengths and positive behavior, instead of using punishment as a form of classroom management. Positive reinforcement includes acknowledging students that are following the rules and behaving appropriately. This allows other students to change their behavior. I find that positive reinforcement is a great stimulant for learning and increase inspiration, creativity and success in the classroom. It allows students to become role models and leaders for their peers.
Other behavioral charts include “Filling the Bucket” as a positive self-awareness tool for students to reflect on their individual behavior. This helps students to become aware of how their behavior affects others. I find that “Filling the Bucket” help build students self-esteem and contribution inside and outside the classroom. It teaches students to be kind and respectful of others.
I understand that there are a variety of student behavioral approaches. A student’s behavior can be tangent and unexpected depending on the students’ behavioral needs. As a teacher it is my responsibility to intervene in these situations and provide the necessary support for the student.
